WooHoo Snow!

We had a class of 8 kids today. I think the snow made it difficult for some of our class mates to get to school. So, we had a fun day of exploring crystals and making snowflakes in different ways.

These snowy pictures were taken just before the Grade One kids joined us after guided reading. So, unfortunately I didn't manage to take any photos of the Grade ones in the snow (sorry!).

We did a little bit of crystal science. We made snowflake shapes out of pipe cleaners and suspended them in a solution of dissolved Borax and boiling water and waited....and waited and watched and waited.....

We did some snowflake crystal art today too.

We drew snowflakes with liquid white glue.

(it was hard work squeezing the bottles to cover our entire pictures)

then we sprinkled table salt over the glue and tapped off the excess

then we touched a paintbrush of watercolour paint into the salt and watched the paint disperse

magical!

tomorrow when we come to school, we are going to look at our dried pictures to see what happens

Some of our pipe cleaner snowflakes looked very different at the end of the day! We are going to leave them overnight to see if anything else happens.

look at all of those crystals!
