At Loutet Garden, we pent some time learning about and exploring soil and compost.
We learned that soil and dirt are different. Soil is full of good things that plants need to grow. Stephanie told us that soil is alive. We also learned that soil is made up of three main things: sand, clay, and silt.
We each put a handful of soil into a jar, Stephanie added some water and a tiny bit of dish soap and we all shook the jar 5 times.
We brought the jar back to the classroom to see what happens over time. We hope that we are going to be able to see the different things that make up the soil.
Then we split up into two groups. One group looked at a worm composting bin.
And the other group took a close up look at a pile of compost.
We were looking for interesting things in the compost.
These are some of the things that we found.
Such a wonderful collaborative effort!
Today, we started spelling. This is mostly for the Grade ones, but the kids in Kindergarten were interested too so we all participated (Ks worked with one letter, ones worked with blended beginnings). The grade ones will be choosing 10 words to work on over the week at home. Look for these words tomorrow in your child's homework bag (Grade 1s).
